The Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association (LAIPLA), and the Orange County Intellectual Property Law Association (OCIPLA), and the Judge Paul R. Michel Intellectual Property American Inn of Court invite you to our annual Judges’ Night reception and dinner at the Cicada Restaurant in Downtown LA on February 28, 2024.
We are extremely pleased to announce that this year’s guests of honor will be the Honorable Kara F. Stoll of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the Honorable Josephine L. Staton, and the Honorable Patricia Donahue, of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Judge Stoll, Judge Staton and Judge Donahue will participate in a panel discussion moderated by Nancy Olson of Olson Stein LLP.

The Honorable Kara F. Stoll, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit
The Honorable Kara Farnandez Stoll was appointed by President Barack H. Obama in July 2015. Prior to her appointment, Judge Stoll practiced law for seventeen years with the firm of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett and Dunner, LLP, where she specialized in patent litigation. Judge Stoll served as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University Law School in 2019, at George Mason University School of Law from 2008 to 2015, and at Howard University School of Law from 2004 to 2008. From 1997 to 1998, she clerked for the Honorable Alvin A. Schall of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Judge Stoll worked at the United States Patent and Trademark Office from 1991 to 1997 as a patent examiner, at the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, and in the Solicitor’s Office. She received a J.D. from Georgetown University School of Law in 1997 and a B.S.E.E. from Michigan State University in 1991.
The Honorable Josephine L. Staton, Judge of the United States District Court of the Central District of California
The Honorable Josephine L. Staton is a United States District Judge who presides over cases in the Central District of California in Los Angeles, California. She was appointed to the federal bench in 2010 by President Obama. Before serving on the federal bench, Judge Staton served for eight years on the Orange County Superior Court bench and, by temporary assignment, on the California Court of Appeal, Second District, Division One. Judge Staton graduated from Harvard Law School in 1986 and began her law career as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable John R. Gibson, U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit. From 1987 through 2002, Judge Staton was in private practice with the law firm of Morrison & Foerster, first as an associate, then as a partner. She worked in Morrison & Foerster’s San Francisco and Orange County offices. In 2001, she was honored as the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association Employment Trial Lawyer of the Year.
The Honorable Patricia Donahue, Magistrate Judge of the United States District Court of the Central District of California
The Honorable Patricia Donahue is a United States Magistrate Judge who presides over cases in Los Angeles. Before her appointment as a Magistrate Judge in 2020, Judge Donahue served with distinction as an Assistant United States Attorney since 1991. As an Assistant United States Attorney, she served in a number of significant roles, including Deputy Chief in the Major Crimes Section, Chief of the General Crimes Section, Chief of the Organized Crime and Terrorism Section and its successor the Violent and Organized Crime Section, Senior Litigation Counsel, Chief of the National Security Division, Special Counsel to the U.S. Attorney for Violent Crime, Senior Litigation Counsel in the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section, and the Chief of Trials, Integrity and Professionalism. As a result of Judge Donahue’s deep commitment to justice, she received a number of awards, including The Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award. Judge Donahue received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Los Angeles.
