The discussion will include an overview of different types of litigation financing arrangements, when and how it can be used effectively, disclosure and discoverability issues, and potential ethical issues. SPEAKERS
Dr. Maria-Vittoria “Giugi” Carminati, Esq., JSD, is LexShares’ Vice President of Business Development, responsible for developing strategic relationships with law firms, in-house legal departments, and their clients to source litigation financing opportunities.
Prior to joining LexShares, Dr. Carminati practiced for over a decade as a litigator in Big Law, a trial boutique, and a civil rights law firm, as well as running her own social justice law firm. Dr. Carminati has given CLEs and lectures on the topics of litigation finance and the ethics of litigation finance around the country, including for national CLE providers.
Dr. Carminati holds a J.S.D. in Space Law and a L.L.M. in Space, Cyber & Telecommunications Law from the University of Nebraska Law School. She earned a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center, magna cum laude, as well as two B.A.s from the University of Houston, summa cum laude.
Boaz Weinstein is Lake Whillans’ Managing Director and Co-Founder. Lake Whillans is a leading commercial litigation finance firm. Chambers USA has consistently ranked Boaz among the top leaders in the litigation finance space.
Boaz was previously a litigator at Cleary Gottlieb, where he represented financial institutions and corporations in complex commercial litigations and arbitrations, and Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann, where he represented investors in high-profile securities class actions.
Boaz served as law clerk to the Honorable Robert P. Patterson, Jr. (S.D.N.Y.) and the Honorable Pamela B. Minzner, then-Chief Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court. Boaz earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School and a B.A. in economics from Harvard University.
Roman Melnik is of counsel to Lowenstein & Weatherwax LLP, and teaches patent law at USC Law School. He was previously a partner with Irell & Manella LLP. Roman’s practice focuses on patent litigation and appeals. Roman also has experience providing opinions of counsel and right to use analyses, and serving as an expert witness. Among his recent notable matters are Kimble v. Marvel Entertainment, LLC, 135 S.Ct. 2401 (2015), which he argued at the Supreme Court, and Medtronic, Inc. v. Mirowski Family Ventures, LLC, 571 U.S. 191 (2014), in which he authored an amicus brief extensively cited by the Court.
Professor Melnik served as a law clerk for the Honorable Phyllis A. Kravitch, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Roman earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he also taught civil procedure, and his A.B. in Chemistry from Harvard University, cum laude, and received his M.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. Roman also taught chemistry at Berkeley and Harvard and worked as a research chemist before earning a J.D.
Meng Xi is a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP. Meng Xi focuses her robust practice on a variety of high-stakes commercial litigation matters in federal and state courts across the country, particularly patent infringement and business contract disputes. Meng has represented well-known, industry-leading clients and has obtained favorable settlements as well as myriad of successes for these clients against industry giants. Meng is also fluent in Mandarin and Shanghainese and before practicing law was software developer.
Meng served as a law clerk for Chief Judge Sharon Prost at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Meng earned her J.D. from University of California, Berkeley with high distinction, and her B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University, with honors and distinction.
