David Bailey, Founding Partner, KPPB LLP
David’s practice specializes in developing and enforcing IP portfolios on behalf of cutting edge technology companies and leading research universities including Caltech, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Stanford, and UCLA.
David has extensive experience in guiding KPPB’s clients through diligence processes associated with fundraising, acquisition and successful IPO. Professor Dennis D. Crouch, University of Missouri School of Law, Patently-O
Dennis Crouch is the Judge C.A. Leedy Professor of Law at Mizzou Law. He is well known for his expertise in both intellectual property and artificial intelligence law. He is widely published in academic journals and is also known as creator and primary author of the popular patent law blog, Patently-O that includes more than 6,000 substantive posts from the past 20 years and tens of millions of visitors.
He has taught a wide range of courses at Mizzou Law, including patent law and advanced patent law (experiential), copyright, internet law (writing intensive), licensing, law of the internet (popular undergraduate course), civil procedure I and II, property I and II, and professional responsibility. His patent classes are known for including substantial experiential components, including an internal moot court competition and substantial patent drafting practice. He has received several teaching awards.
Prior to joining the Mizzou Law Faculty, Crouch was a patent attorney in Chicago, Illinois, and taught at Boston University Law School. He received a BSE in mechanical engineering cum laude from Princeton University, where he also earned a certificate in engineering management systems. He then earned his JD cum laude from the University of Chicago Law School. While at the University of Chicago, he was a Microsoft, Merck, & Pfizer scholar, and a member of the Olin program in law and economics.
Prior to attending law school, Professor Crouch worked on a number of interesting engineering projects that included time as a research fellow at NASA’s Glenn Research Center, as a software developer at the Mayo Clinic’s department of biomedical imaging, and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, West Africa. Dennis Crouch grew up on a farm near Pittsburg, Kansas.
Jessica Hudak, Vice President and Corporate Counsel, Edwards Lifesciences
Jessica Hudak is currently Vice President, Corporate Counsel at Edwards Lifesciences where she serves as Team General Counsel for its Advanced Technology Business Unit and Technology Centers of Excellence. Jessica sits on the Advanced Technology Leadership Team, the enterprise-wide R&D Leadership Team, and the Global Law Department Leadership Team.
Jessica previously worked for Gibson Dunn as a member of the Appellate and Constitutional Law group where she represented clients in the Supreme Court, Circuit Courts of Appeals, and district courts. Jessica was part of the team representing Smith & Nephew in U.S. v. Arthrex before the Supreme Court.
Prior to Gibson Dunn, Jessica was a law clerk to then-Chief Judge Sharon Prost of the Federal Circuit and has been a lecturer at Stanford for over 17 years. Jessica earned her J.D. from Stanford Law School, M.S. in Biomechanical Engineering from Stanford, and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Michigan.
Patrick Maloney, Partner, Cork Maloney LLP, Moderator
Patrick Maloney represents clients in a range of intellectual property disputes and has significant experience representing patent owners in patent post-grant proceedings, including inter partes reviews (IPRs), covered business method reviews, and ex parte reexaminations.
Before founding Cork Maloney, Patrick spent a decade at leading post-grant litigation boutiques. Patrick got his start in post-grant litigation in 2013, shortly after IPRs were created by the America Invents Act. Since then, Patrick has represented clients in over 200 post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, securing numerous wins at both the institution and final written decision stages. Patrick has also successfully represented parties in District Court litigation and before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.
Along with his litigation practice, Patrick also counsels startups and small businesses looking to develop and protect their intellectual property. Patrick previously worked in the University of Southern California’s Stevens Center for Innovation, helping to evaluate, manage, and license intellectual property developed at USC.
Patrick is a registered patent attorney with a background in chemistry who has handled matters involving a range of technologies, including telecommunications, streaming media distribution, medical devices, diagnostics, circuitry, network access control, secure electronic transactions, and antenna design.
Patrick has been recognized for his extensive work in inter partes review. In 2021, Patrick was ranked 9th on Managing IP’s list of top lawyers for patent owners in IPRs filed in 2021. In 2020, Patexia ranked Patrick as number 19 on its list of most-active patent owners’ counsel in IPRs since 2015.
Patrick is also actively involved in the patent community. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association. Patrick is also heavily involved in the PTAB Bar Association, where he is a vice-chair on the Appeals from the PTAB Committee. Patrick appears in webinars and panel discussions for both organizations and has authored numerous articles on recent developments in patent law.
