Law School Outreach The Law School Outreach committee establishes relationships between LAIPLA and the local area law schools. During the months of August-October, the committee sponsors a “Road Show” at each of the local law schools for law students to attend. Each road show has panels of 3-5 attorneys that represent each of the major areas and types of intellectual property practice - litigation, prosecution, patent, trademark, copyright, in-house, and firm. The road shows all culminate with an invitation for the students to attend the October LAIPLA monthly dinner meeting free of charge. The Law School Outreach committee should ensure that the appropriate person at each law school has knowledge of the upcoming LAIPLA meetings and distributes flyers/announcements regarding the meetings.
Court Watch The Court Watch committee is responsible for organizing (or monitoring a service that organizes) announcements regarding recent intellectual property filings and hearings in the local courts. The intent is to make LAIPLA members aware of when their fellow colleagues will be presenting oral arguments (e.g., for summary judgment, Markman hearings, openings, closings, etc.).
Newsletter The Newsletter committee is responsible for gathering materials, proof reading, and overseeing our primary means of communication with the local intellectual property community and LAIPLA members. Per the bylaws: It shall be the duty of this committee to periodically write, edit and publish the Newsletter which may include, among other items: letters from the President, announcements of future meetings, notices of proposed applicants of membership as required in Section 3.2, and of the comings and goings of members of this Association.
Judge’s Night The Judge’s Night committee is chaired by the Vice-President and is responsible for organizing the annual Judge’s Night to honor the judiciary.
Washington in the West The Washington in the West committee is responsible for organizing the annual Washington in the West seminar in which officials from Washington D.C. including United States Patent and Trademark Office officials, examiners, Judges, etc. are invited to attend and speak at a full day seminar.
Spring Seminar The Spring Seminar committee is overseen by the President and is responsible for organizing the annual weekend Spring seminar. Responsibilities include selection of the venue, the daily speakers, the evening festivities, and miscellaneous activities for members and families.
Membership Per the bylaws: It shall be the duty of this committee: (a) To endeavor to increase the total membership of the Association by mailing, with the consent and advise of the Board to Directors, appropriate efforts to encourage applications for membership by eligible non-members; (b) To recommend to the Board of Directors activities, events, and programs which will promote fellowship of the members and to implement such recommendations when approved by the Board of Directors; (c) To study matters effecting the economic interests of the members of this Association such as retirement plans, pension programs, and the like, and (d) To make recommendations to the Board of Directors in regard to the above duties.
Monthly Meeting This committee is responsible for organizing the monthly dinner meetings including selecting the venue, menu, arranging speakers, preparing meeting announcements, and preparing summaries of past meetings. Per the bylaws: It shall be the duty of this committee: (a) To arrange for the speakers at the Association's periodic meetings; (b) To arrange for the meeting facilities and menu; (c) To collect money at the door; (d) To determine that all attending have paid; (e) To advise the Secretary of advance information concerning meetings so that notices can be prepared and mailed to the membership; and (f) To make recommendations to the Board of Directors in regard to the above duties.
Website The website committee is responsible for ensuring that all information on the website is up to date. The committee is also responsible for working with and selecting a web designer, domain/website host, etc. and presenting recommendations to the board relating to changes relating to the above.
Litigation/Round Table The Litigation/Round Table committee is responsible for examining and recommending topics for monthly meetings or otherwise relating to litigation in all areas of intellectual property. The committee is also responsible for investigating and organizing “Round Table” lunches hosted by/at local area law firms on intellectual property topics.
Trademark The Trademark committee is responsible for planning at least one meeting during the fiscal year relating to trademarks. The committee is also responsible for recommending and assisting the Washington in the West committee and Spring Seminar committee in organizing trademark topics/speakers/panels at the respective events.
Per the bylaws: It shall be the duty of this committee: (a) To consider all aspects of the practice of trademark law before the United States Patent and Trademark Office; (b) To aid in the institution of improvements in the administration to the trademark laws by the United States Patent and Trademark, Office; (c) To monitor proposed changes in the Patent and Trademark Office Rules of Practice relating to trademark law and, with the advice and consent of the Board of Directors, inform the Patent and Trademark Office as to the position of the Association; (d) To receive and coordinate views of members in connection with any existing problems or suggestions; (e) To coordinate with the Legislative Committee of the Association in connection with the proposed legislation affecting trademark practice before the Patent and Trademark Office; and (f) To make recommendations to the Board of Directors in regard to the above duties.
Judiciary/LAIPLA Relations This committee is responsible for establishing and maintaining good relations between the local judiciary and LAIPLA. The committee will identify appropriate court liaisons, confirm judge/court contact information (including addresses and telephone numbers) and inform/invite local judges to attend all LAIPLA meetings. The committee is also responsible for working with the Los Angeles IP Inns of Court to arrange a joint meeting at least once per year (as part of a monthly meeting if possible).
PTO/LAIPLA Relations This committee is responsible for establishing and maintaining good relations between the United States Patent and Trademark Office and LAIPLA. The committee should maintain/confirm addresses and contact information for the persons responsible for attaining USPTO speakers at meetings. The committee is also responsible for attempting to organize a teleconference with appropriate USPTO personnel and invited LAIPLA members to discuss the state of the Patent Office and any new rules, guidelines, or information that would be considered useful appropriate to LAIPLA members. The Committee is also responsible for contacting congressman relating to intellectual property legislation that may affect the LAIPLA members.
Sponsor The Sponsor committee is responsible for organizing and recommending sponsorship packages (for both monthly meetings, Judge’s night, Washington in the West, and Spring Seminar) to the board. Once sponsorship packages have been approved, the committee is responsible for contacting and attempting to obtain sponsors for all LAIPLA events.
Copyright The Copyright committee is responsible for planning at least one meeting during the fiscal year relating to copyrights. The committee is also responsible for recommending and assisting the Washington in the West committee and Spring Seminar committee in organizing/recommending copyright topics/speakers/panels at the respective events.
Per the bylaws: It shall be the duty of this committee: (a) To consider all aspects of the practice of copyright law before the Copyright Office; (b) To aid in the institution Of improvements in the administration of the copyright laws by the Copyright Office; (c) To monitor proposed changes in the Copyright Office regulations and, with the advice and consent of the Board of Directors, inform the Copyright Office as to the position of the Association regarding such proposed changes; (d) To receive and coordinate views of members in connection with any existing problems or suggestions for improvements in the Copyright Office administration and, with the advice and consent of the Board of Directors, forward these views to the Copyright Office. These views may involve proposals for change in the regulations as well as administrative changes; (e) To coordinate with the Legislation Committee of the Association in connection with the proposed legislation affecting copyright practice before the Copyright Office; and (f) To make recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding the above duties.
