Judges’ Night Committee

The Judges’ Night Committee plans our annual event that gives our members the opportunity
to honor, learn from, and interact with the judges who serve in courts handling intellectual property matters. A typical Judges’ Night program includes a keynote address and a discussion of key intellectual property issues by a panel of distinguished judges. The Judges’ Night program normally ends with a question-and-answer session, during which audience members can ask the esteemed panelists about any number of intellectual property topics. This unique forum joins lawyers and judges from diverse backgrounds and fosters lively discussions of current intellectual property issues. See Judges’ Night photos.

The 2014 Judges’ Night program took place at the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The program included a keynote address by Judge Kathleen M. O’Malley of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit followed by a lively panel discussion among Judge O’Malley and Judges S. James Otero and George H. Wu of the Central District of California covering subject matter patentability, recent developments in the law concerning claim construction and a variety of other topics of keen interest to patent litigators.

The Judges’ Night Committee is responsible for arranging and organizing all aspects of the Judges’ Night program. The Committee’s responsibilities include securing panelists (as well as a keynote speaker who is normally also a panelist), suggesting discussion topics and providing research assistance to the panelists, selecting and securing the venue, coordinating with other organizations – such as the Los Angeles IP Inn of Court – if the event is co-sponsored, securing sponsors, and advertising the event to State and Federal judges as well as to our members and other intellectual property practitioners throughout Southern California.
