ABOUT LAIPLA

“To Educate and Connect”

The Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association (LAIPLA) is one of the nation’s premier intellectual property law associations. Since 1934, LAIPLA has been educating and connecting members of the local  intellectual property legal community.

With more than 900 members, and 30+ Member Firms, LAIPLA represents a mix of in-house, large and small firm, and government attorneys; solo practitioners; and law students and professors who specialize in patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and entertainment and technology law.

Our organization awards an annual Distinguished Public Service Award to a member who has made a significant contribution to the public good. Past recipients include Judge George H. Wu and Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne H. Segal.

LAIPLA created the Diversity Fellowship in 2014 to increase diversity in the Intellectual Property Bar, awarded to Law Students who through the donation of generous sponsors are able to receive a stipend over the summer. This annual award is announced at our annual Judges’ Night Gala.

We offer a diverse array of programming, including three full-day seminars that cover legal issues relevant to patent, copyright, trademark, trade secrets and other areas of IP. We also provide programs geared toward bringing together the judiciary and the local IP bar, with our Judges’ Night Gala and our LAIPLA Goes to Court Program. We additionally have initiated specific programs targeted to membership sub-groups such as Young Lawyers, Women in IP, and Small Firm and Solo Practitioners.

As a non-profit organization that is continuingly growing to meet the needs of its membership, LAIPLA relies on the financial support of our Member Firms. This support has become vital to our ability to continue offering high caliber, top notch programing, including:

  • Spring Seminar: The premier LAIPLA event of the year, featuring panel discussions on the latest developments in intellectual property law. Spring Seminar also provides excellent networking opportunities at cocktail receptions and dinners, and allows sufficient time for relaxation and enjoyable outdoor activities, including a golf outing organized specifically for LAIPLA attendees.
  • Judges’ Night Gala: Our biggest night of the year, honoring those members of the judiciary who handle intellectual property matters and featuring an interactive discussion of current topics with a panel of prominent judges. LAIPLA announces at this Gala its Public Service Award presented to a California Federal or State judge who has made a significant contribution to the public good.
  • Washington in the West: One-day seminar for patent prosecutors, now in its 22nd year. This program affords patent prosecutors a unique forum to discuss issues directly with USPTO representatives.
  • TechTainment: Full-day seminar (offered in conjunction with Loyola Law School) that combines the burgeoning new areas of Technology + Entertainment.
  • LAIPLA Goes to Court: A dialogue with Central District of California judges at the new courthouse.
  • Members Only Holiday Experience: A unique and fun holiday extravaganza for members and spouses/significant others.
  • Women in IP: Programs geared toward the advancement of women and promoting networking within our Women IP membership.
  • Members Only Welcome Back Bash: Our annual kick-off event creating community building and opportunities for extensive networking.
  • Young Lawyers Events: Programs geared toward attorneys practicing 10 years or less. YL events provide training and networking opportunities for new lawyers.
  • Law School Outreach: Every year, we visit Loyola Law School, Pepperdine, Southwestern, USC, UCLA and UC Irvine law schools to outreach to future IP attorneys.
  • Small Firm and Solo Practitioner Events: Programs geared toward attorneys working in a solo practice or small firm environment, offering networking and training.
