A recent post explains the possibility of a massive “RIF” at the Patent Office which could result in the instant retirement of up to a thousand senior examiners. The question has been raised:  Would a RIF really be so bad for the patent system?

The PDF version of this note (attached) explains why a massive reduction in force (RIF) would strip the Patent Office of its most valued senior examiners who came directly to the Office from undergraduate school, most still just over 55 years old who suddenly are given special incentives to retire immediately.  Losing the best and brightest leaders of the Office would be devastating to the patent system.
